A whale seen swimming around Bergen.  That was the big April Fool’s story last year.

This year a number of newspapers printed out headlines of April Fool-worthy stories you just don’t know what to believe in the papers today!

Here’s an excerpt from Aftenposten.no further discussing the jokes of the day:

April Fool’s jokes abounded

Norway’s media continued to take tradition seriously on Tuesday, punctuating newspapers and broadcasts with silly stories aimed at fooling readers and listeners.

Newspaper Aftenposten was among them, running a story that troubled state railway NSB would start offering “travel guarantees” of NOK 500 (USD 100) to passengers when trains were cancelled. Transport Minister Liv Signe Navarsete went along with the gag, allowing herself to be quoted and photographed in connection with the story in the April 1 issue.

Small newspaper Vårt Land, known as the country’s Christian paper, grabbed attention for its joke-story that Culture Minister Trond Giske was to be named an archbishop. Giske, the paper claimed, had been using his free time during the past year to study theology, and planned to place the archbishop’s seat at the Nidaros Cathedral in his home district of Trondheim.

Other stories on April 1 included Norwegian Broadcasting’s report that christenings can soon be performed over the Internet, and newspaperAdresseavisen’s story that tiny, high-powered, soundless electric cars will be the Trondheim police department’s new tool for crime-fighting.
