Walking on Crutches 8 March, 2008

My fourth weekend in the mountains this year ended quite not as planned.   Things looked promising on Saturday what with perfect skiing conditions and powder snow.   We were skiing down some blue slopes when the lifts broke down which left us no choice but to go down a red slope.  Unfortunately my skis got stuck in some deep snow as i tumbled down a portion and twisted my leg and heard a loud crack.  For a sec I thought it was nothing until i tried to move my leg and found that it hurted like hell.

I helped onboard a ski scooter to the doctor’s and luckily found nothing broken except perhaps some torn ligaments.  We don’t know yet for sure until my MRI next week.  So cross fingers my meniscus are still intact.  I did a couple of researches and found that this was a common injury for athletes which can be repaired by an arthroscopy.  And then I thought – great, and I don’t really see myself as an athlete!  Shit happens I guess.

It could have been worse though.  Sunday morning I was stuck on the couch watching the alpine skiing competition and saw the Austrian skier Matthias Lanzinger’s terrifying accident on the slope.  Unfortunately, the guy’s gonna lose his left leg.

Walking on crutches ain’t so easy.  First you feel like an old guy.  Then you have to work the stairs.  Then try standing up on one leg – which is now straining my right ankle…  And try to resign myself to the fact that I might have to postpone my Easter holiday and appointment with the beach. But as I said, it could have been worse…
