MRI Results 29 March, 2008

I got my MRI results last week. The diagnosis is basically a total rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). I’ve read that an operation might be needed to repair the rupture. But I’m still waiting for an appointment with an orthopedic doctor (and it’s been 2 weeks). Things take time in Norway…
So I’ve read that an operation is actually better than not having one to repair the damage. If that happens, rehab might take 4 to 5 months – the thought of which has been bothering me a bit. But no choice really but to get resigned to that fact and face the music.
The procedure is called an arthroscopy which entails some small incisions over the knee. It is an outpatient procedure common for sports injuries. By now I’ve read quite a lot on the subject. The names and definitions makes it sound complicated, serious and scary so it actually took me a bit of time to be comfortable with it. I mean, it’s not yet for sure that I will need some procedure, but hey, better prepared than surprised later!

Easter at home 22 March, 2008

Ah well… forget about skiing or going to the beach. Spending easter at home is not that bad. Finished a couple of movies which I have been keeping in my hard drive for months now. I’m half way done with a book which I have started last year but stopped.
The view out of Bergen is winter-like. It had snowed a couple of days back (in March!) but I wouldn’t have it any other way. The temps are hovering around zeros and heard that my favorite skiing place just had -29 C last night. Too bad I’m stuck on my couch.
Come to think of it, I’ve never had this much days of doing nothing. Summer days when I was in school was always busy with activities and stuff. Long weekends were always planned with outings with folks. I guess if I was up and about I would’ve been running around on the beach right now.
Thank God for the internet and TV. They keep you in touch with the rest of the world and whiles your time away on the couch. The reports on the news lately were being broadcasted from ski resorts. Apparently that’s where everyone else are these days. The traffic queues to the ski lifts are a mile long in some places. 61 skiing injuries and counting as of Thursday. And also an avalanche report.
I’ve just registered for a MySpace account out of boredom yesterday. Invite me as a friend by clicking on this link if you have a MySpace account.
I’ve also always wondered what’s all the fuss with the old old old movie My Fair Lady so I was able to get it and check it out. It was 3 hours long and it was pretty good for a movie done in the 64.
Believe it or not, I’ve never seen Borat so that’s up next in my list.

Walking on Crutches 8 March, 2008

My fourth weekend in the mountains this year ended quite not as planned. Things looked promising on Saturday what with perfect skiing conditions and powder snow. We were skiing down some blue slopes when the lifts broke down which left us no choice but to go down a red slope. Unfortunately my skis got stuck in some deep snow as i tumbled down a portion and twisted my leg and heard a loud crack. For a sec I thought it was nothing until i tried to move my leg and found that it hurted like hell.
I helped onboard a ski scooter to the doctor’s and luckily found nothing broken except perhaps some torn ligaments. We don’t know yet for sure until my MRI next week. So cross fingers my meniscus are still intact. I did a couple of researches and found that this was a common injury for athletes which can be repaired by an arthroscopy. And then I thought – great, and I don’t really see myself as an athlete! Shit happens I guess.
It could have been worse though. Sunday morning I was stuck on the couch watching the alpine skiing competition and saw the Austrian skier Matthias Lanzinger’s terrifying accident on the slope. Unfortunately, the guy’s gonna lose his left leg.
Walking on crutches ain’t so easy. First you feel like an old guy. Then you have to work the stairs. Then try standing up on one leg – which is now straining my right ankle… And try to resign myself to the fact that I might have to postpone my Easter holiday and appointment with the beach. But as I said, it could have been worse…
